01

Distinguish the consultation from the case team

The person leading an initial conversation may not be the person doing daily work. Ask who would supervise the matter and which tasks are commonly handled by attorneys, paralegals, or other staff.

02

Set communication expectations

Ask how status updates are provided, where documents are shared, who returns routine messages, and what circumstances trigger a call from the supervising lawyer.

03

Know what could change

Ask whether the matter could be referred to or jointly handled with another firm and how you would be informed. Review the written agreement for terms that address staffing or associated counsel.
